Overview of Challenge

This challenge has past, however, the following details outline the challenge:


The Multimedia Production Center held the 3rd annual 24 Hour Digital Video Challenge which begins Friday, 2/1/08 at 5:00PM.

This MPC Challenge is unique, only allowing participants a 24 hour period to plan, shoot and edit their video.  The topic of the video is your call, but there will be some key elements to be included in your production that won't be announced until the start of the event.

Schedule:

  • Registration - Registration Deadline is Friday 2/1 at Noon
  • Gather in the MPC lab on Friday 2/1 at 5:00PM to pick up any gear you will need, a MiniDV tape, your team information packet, and to learn about the mystery elements you'll need to incorporate.
  • Plan, shoot and edit your video. Additional MPC lab hours are available.
  • Submit your video on a MiniDV tape to the MPC no later than 5:30PM on Saturday 2/2 (including a talent release for anyone appearing in the video)
  • 24 Hour Video Festival - Bring your friends to view the participants videos and to find out who has won on 2/13 at 8:00PM in the Litrenta Lecture Hall (Toll SG10).

Rules:

  • Participants must submit a video of their own creation. If time allows, you can submit multiple entries.
  • Although you are allowed to use copyrighted materials, we prefer you only use source materials you have rights to use, allowing us to showcase your work online legally. The MPC will make a legal library of stock music available.
  • Team leaders must be Washington College Students.
  • Final videos must be submitted on miniDV tape, clearly labeled with the team leader's name. You can submit multiple entries on the same tape, but be sure you let us know in writing what each title is, and those involved in the creation.
  • Participants may not begin the production of their video before the 24 hour event time period.
  • Films must be submitted on Saturday 2/2, no later than 5:30PM to Brian Palmer in the Multimedia Production Center.
  • All actors/talent that appear in the video must sign a talent release, which you must submit with your miniDV tape.
  • OIT student employees may enter this MPC Challenge. (No OIT staff will be involved in the judging process).
  • We reserve the right to modify the rules as necessary.

Judging Criteria:

Although the MPC is hosting this event, no MPC or OIT staff will be involved in the judging process. Judges will be professionals in the film/video production industry. Judges will be scoring submissions based on the following criteria:

  • General Impression
  • Idea/Concept
    • Script/story/message
    • Integration of mystery elements
  • Production
    • Production Management
    • Camera work
    • Lighting
    • Audio
  • Post Production
    • Editing
    • Production Design

24 Hour Digital Video Festival:

Finalists will be presented in the Litrenta Lecture Hall (Toll SG10) on February 13th at 8:00PM. Following this presentation, we will announce the three highest scoring films and award prizes. Refreshments will be served!


Prizes:

1st Place - ZR800 MiniDV Camcorder Kit, Bag & 3 MiniDV tapes

2nd Place - $50 Gift Certificate to B&H Photo Video& 3 MiniDV tapes

3rd Place - $25 Gift Cetificate to B&H Photo Video & 3 MiniDV tapes.


Additional Resources:

  • The MPC Lab will be open 2/1 until at least midnight, and open Saturday from 10:00AM - 5:30PM at which time all videos are due. 3 Mac Pro and 2 IBM workstations are available for editing. Additional MacBook Pro laptops will be available with iMovie to support additional editing needs.
  • Our Loaner Pool has MiniDV Camcorders and tripods available for each team. Each team will receive a MiniDV tape on which to shoot their footage and submit their final video.
  • Talent Release (we require getting your talent to fill this out. You should submit a copy for each identifiable person in your video, along with your finished miniDV tape
